S.A.A.S.Y was born when a college friend suggested competing in the Miss Austin Peay Volunteer pageant. Every contestant is required to have a platform that they speak on. I knew my platform needed to be something I was passionate about and a topic that I knew I could talk about from the heart.
My first encounter with sexual assault was when I was 11 years old when a boy decided to touch me in a sexual nature inappropriately. As traumatic as this was, the rape I experienced at the age of 15 pushed me to the point of extreme depression, uncontrollable anxiety, and unexplainable fear. Someone I knew took complete and total advantage of me without my consent. Although I no longer think of myself as a victim but as a survivor, I still struggle with the effects of what happened to me every day. However, I have not allowed this to define me.
At this point in my life, I have reached a place where I feel like it is time to share my experiences, push past the pain, and help others who have experienced the same traumatic events. This is where S.A.A.S.Y takes over.
Through S.A.A.S.Y, the "Brave Me, Brave You" initiative and "These Hands Don't Hurt" banner project have come to life.
